Two dystopian trilogies, The Hunger games and Divergent, present similar ideas of future society. Each series takes place in Northern America. The Hunger Games is set all across areas of the United States, and Divergent is set specifically in the city of Chicago. The Hunger Games depicts a society separated by districts. Each district is closely monitored and harshly controlled by the capital. Divergent depicts a futuristic representation of Chicago. The city is split into factions separated by individual personality traits and skills. The government closely monitors each faction, keeping them strictly separated. The similarities of the two series show a prediction of America’s downfall.

The factions and districts among the two trilogies show the separation of society. This separation in both situations appears to be a result of the government’s power. Distance among the people seems to be the prime downfall, and in turn allows the government additional power and control over the citizens. Separation of traits and skills limits the overall potential of the community, and allows room for error. Unity is what holds together a community, and the segregation of people allows for the deterioration of society by government control

Both trilogies show an advanced outlook on technology that impacts both societies in negative ways. In The Hunger Games, the technological advances are solely present in the capital, and not in the other districts, setting the people at an automatic disadvantage. These advances are the reason that the hunger games are possible; by manipulating reality through technology in a way that controls the tributes. In Divergent series, the government often uses technological advances to manipulate the people. They go as far as to use serums, gases, and injections to manipulate brain function. The factions keep peoples’ curiosity at rest, preventing them from fighting to know what’s beyond the city wall.

As in any situation, the government having too much power is never a good thing. The government was dangered by one symbol of hope. Both Tris and Katniss are viewed as powerful symbols of hope for the future, which threatened the government’s authority. In both situations, powerful figures attempted to gain their trust to monitor their actions, and limit their achievements. Katniss’ presence in the hunger games gives people energy, and prepares them to fight and rebel. President Snow attempts to rid of Katniss by ensuring she must fight in the games again. Tris attempts to encourage the people to rebel and destroy the faction system.

The similarities of these series present a common idea of how America will one day reach its downfall through the use of advanced technology, separation of society, and destroying symbols of hope.
