The acronym LGBT refers to Lesbians, Gay, Bisexuals, and Transgender. Although most people treat LGBT as people of the same identity, it is unequivocal that there are specific needs and concerns related to each identity (Hunt 20). The following are the characters that form LGBT:

Lesbians: The group is made up of women who are sexually and emotionally attracted primarily to other women.

Gay: A person who is attracted primarily to members of the same sex. Consequently, it is used to describe any person, regardless of gender, who is sexually attracted to people of their sex.

Bisexuals: They are the people who are emotionally and sexually attracted to both people of their sex and another sex.

Transgender: The term is used to describe individuals who do not like to identify with their assigned gender at birth or the binary gender system.

The movie Black Mirrors, "San Junipero" episode, introduces the audience to an LGBT romance between the actor called Kelly and Yorkie. The two actors are both female and they meet at a nightclub (Tucker). Yorkie tends to be shy and feels uncomfortable to dance with Kelly because they are both females. At this point Kelly asks, "Wanna go to bed with me?" it happens after she has caressed Yorkie's leg. The following day Yorkie returns to the nightclub to look for Kelly, at this moment they get sexually attracted to one another, and they both head to Kelly's house to have sex. The movie goes further to demonstrate that Yorkie has a mental problem, which she got after quarreling with her parents, and then drove off only to have an accident. By then she was twenty-one years old, and the reason for their rift is because Yorkie is a lesbian. Yorkie's parents are religious and do not believe in lesbianism. On the other hand, Kelly was the wife to Richard, and they had two children. However, in the movie Kelly explains that she has always been attracted to women but had never had a relationship with any because she did not want to cheat on her husband. According to the movie, Kelly is a bisexual, and this is evident in her reply to Yorkie. Yorkie asked, "When did you know you liked women?" Kelly answered, "I like men too."

Currently, the number of LGBT is on the rise, and they have even formed associations to fight for their rights (Jones & Richard 24). But the question is which rights are they fighting for? How can one purport to fight for his or her rights when they cannot adhere to the natural rights given to them freely? Natural right dictates that women should be sexually attracted to men. Moreover, how can one claim to be sexually drawn to both males and females? Why are some people greedy when it comes to sex? The movie portrays lesbianism as unnatural and unreligious. Furthermore, individuals who practice lesbianism and bisexuals are always afraid of doing it in the open.

Religion and LGBT

In the movie Black Mirror, Yorkie's parents were Christians, and they did not like the fact that their daughter is a lesbian. To them, lesbianism is unnatural and against God's commands. Currently, the church is divided when it comes to the issue of LGBT. Most churches see homosexuality as a purposeful perversion while some accept it as a natural alternative (Jones & Richard 45). The other school of thought thinks that homosexuality is a non-chosen mental disorder akin to alcoholism and drug abuse. Christians and most denominations continue to uphold to the traditional Christian belief that homosexuality is sinful. However, others have reconsidered their view on LGBT, and they accept the act (Hunt 37). Furthermore, anti-LGBT crusaders usually quote some verses in the Bible to remind the Christians that it is wrong to be a bisexual, gay or even a lesbian.

According to Romans 1:27, the Bible states, "Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion." It shows that the Bible is against gays and it goes further to explain that whoever practices homosexuality will be punished. The book of Leviticus 18:22, also talks about homosexuality. The verse states, "A man shall not lie with another man as with a woman; it is an abomination." Hence it is unequivocal according to the Bible that homosexuality is an unnatural act and whoever practices it must face some form of punishment (Jones & Richard 61). From the movie and the Bible, I learn that Christians ought to shun homosexuality. Yorkie's parents detested their daughter and even neglected her because she was a lesbian and the Bible also advocates for people, especially Christians, to fight against LGBT (Hunt 57). Although the subject is still considered to be a taboo in most parts of Asia, Latin America, and Africa, it is evident from both the Bible and the movie that homosexuality was common in most of the ancient cultures. The ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians accepted homosexuality within certain contexts.

Nature of LGBT

Over the years there has been a debate whether lesbianism or bisexual is a natural or unnatural. According to Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, being a gay man or woman is a personal choice that people make. In an article by Ghose (2015), the writer proves that after years of research that people cannot change their sexual orientation. Furthermore, most scientists suggest that being LGBT may have a genetic or biological basis (Jones & Richard 83). From the movie, I tend to agree with Ben Carson that being a homosexual is a personal choice. It is because Kelly only became a lesbian after her husband was dead. Kelly, from the movie, started practicing bisexual after the death of her husband. It shows that it is a personal choice and not biological because one can just decide to be a homosexual without going through any biological transformation.

Public perspective regarding LGBT

When it comes to the issue of LGBT, public opinion is divided depending on the religious affiliation and the culture preferred by the people in the respective countries. According to Yorkie in the movie, she is afraid of dancing with Kelly because they are both females and she thinks that people will see it as strange and criticize them. It shows what lesbians and bisexuals go through in most countries (Hunt 84). Most societies have not fully accepted LGBTs; they are seen as outcasts or people who suffer from mental illness. For example, in most African countries homosexuality is illegal and people who are found practicing homosexuality face severe penalties. Hence, lesbians and bisexuals practice it secretly to avoid criticism and condemnation from the general public.

Finally, LGBT is currently a sensitive issue in most countries. Homosexuality is also on the rise, and most governments are now legalizing homosexuality in their countries. The Church is now divided on the issue of lesbianism and bisexuals; some are against it terming it as unholy while some clergymen think it is to practice homosexuality. It will take time for the whole world to accept lesbians and bisexuals but eventually most countries will legalize it because it is rapidly growing.
