The ‘Black Mirror’ season 3 appears to have a great impact on the ratings of the TV show with various themes of family, homosexuality, euthanasia and many other themes. The fourth episode has been considered as the most watched episode and the favorite for most people. Unlike the other episodes, San Junipero does not rely on devious twists, shocking scenarios or scathing analogy. The episode focuses on young love in a normative and cultural concept of San Junipero. The cultural concept is captured in the 1980’s where Yorkie is seen wandering in a town that looks dated back. The episode has used technology to bring a bespectacled flower known as Yorkie together with Kelly, who is very outgoing. The episode is filled with a passionate romance between the two girls leaving the audience in tears. The Black Mirror creator, Charlie Brooker, confesses that the original concept of San Junipero episode involved the normal ‘bot meets girl’ love. He decided to make the episode more powerful by creating a plot of love and marriage based on a lesbian relationship. The 80’s theme was also used to portray the different social norms and attitudes that have transformed in the modern era such as the Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual Transgender (LGBT) community (Koppelman, 96).

The issue of homosexuality has been considered the controversial topic with many people disagreeing with the culture. Therefore, the ‘San Junipero’ episode may be considered as a very controversial episode. It would offend many people from different cultures and backgrounds because of homosexuality and euthanasia topics. The episode begins by showing a very shy and lost Yorkie who walks into a club and bumps into Kelly. Kelly’s characters help in getting Yorkie out of her shell as they dance and talk. The stereotyping of homosexuality is evident when Yorkie flees the dance floor in fear of people judging them for dancing together. Yorkie represents the traditional cultures and beliefs of the 80’s where homosexuality was not acceptable in the society. Therefore, the audience understands Yorkie’s impulse by relating to the 80’s era on homosexuality.

San Junipero has been used in the episode to represent the practical ways in which modern technology has been used in the LGBT community. Today, the LGBT community uses technology such as dating sites, chat rooms, and apps to communicate and see each other. In the websites or chat rooms the individuals appear as avatars until they are willing to disclose their real identities (Adelman, 76). In the episode, San Junipero is a virtual place where the two characters can feel nostalgic about when they are elderly. In real life, Kelly appears to be dying of Cancer while Yorkie is in a coma after being paraplegic due to a car crash accident in the past. Therefore, San Junipero is a sad place for the reunion of the two young lovers.

The drama between Yorkie and Kelly also helps in understanding the LGBT concept. Yorkie is new into the homosexuality relationship and does not understand how it works. It is evident when she asks Kelly to make it easy for her to understand their form of courtship. Kelly who is bisexual and for Yorkie who has become a queer woman, it makes their love relationship face various challenges. San Junipero plays the important role of which the two women met and enjoy their love as a form of nostalgia. The lesbian aspect in Kelly is intended to help Yorkie open up from her shy and timid attitude that is portrayed at the beginning of the episode. The love they share sparks from the moment they met at the club. They make promises that they follow up and make sure to accomplish. Before Yorkie’s passing over, Kelly requests five minutes to go under the technological machine and propose to Yorkie. The marriage and proposal influence the audience into the aspect of homosexual marriages.

The episode transforms the audience’s understanding of love in the LGBT community as depicted in the episode. Kelly and Yorkie share an innocent and genuine love that leaves the audience very emotional. The flashbacks to San Junipero where technology is used to bring together the two represents the use of modern technology advancements to finding love. The episode also helps in campaigning for the respect of the LGBT community in an era where many people have been killed for being homosexuals (Koppelman, 204). The audience understands the cultural changes that have occurred when it comes to accepting and understanding people who are from the LGBT community. The San Junipero episode acts as a moral lesson for the audience of the influence, challenges and true meaning of real love. Euthanasia is also depicted in the film when Kelly marries Yorkie before passing over. Some of the audience get to learn about the euthanasia concept despite being unacceptable to various religious communities. It also helps the audience understand that dying may not necessarily mean an end but also the beginning of something new.
