The two words, “I Found”, are very intriguing when standing alone. What was found? Where was it found, and how? How important is this discovery? Was it being searched for, or was it stumbled upon randomly? Amber Run is depicting a new found love that was discovered under an extremely undesirable situation. So when the lyrics, “I found love where it wasn’t supposed to be, right in front of me, talk some sense to me”, are repeated over and over it begs for the audience to find the importance of this loves’ foundation. Throughout the entire video the younger man’s love grows stronger for the young woman he helped abduct. When she is being abducted she is representative of something that is delicate and vulnerable, but once the young man begins to feel pity toward her the power of love washes over him. It guides him to give her little things that shows her he cares and eventually helps him build the courage to make her escape. The water is the most important symbol in the whole video, and it is displayed in a way that can easily be over looked. Water is symbolic of love itself, because love is something that is so powerful yet delicate that it has to be cared for or else it will slip away.

The opening shot is of a wave crashing into a rock in the foreground, then the camera follows the water as it continues to disperse and float in mid-air. Love is a powerful force that has the ability to knock people off their feet with, or without, anticipation. Much like water there is nothing that can stop the flow of love, it will continue to move through even the tiniest cracks of the heart until it completely overcomes people, leaving them in an overwhelming awe of drowning in a sea of love. When put in slow motion the crashing waves are something so mesmerizing it engulfs all focus by creating a dynamic where chaos is beautifully simple. Throughout the video everything seems to work back to the rushing water because of the turmoil the two men created by abducting the girl.

The young woman is seen in white lying peacefully in her bed, when all of the sudden two strange men rush into the room and start manipulating her to where she has no control over her own body. The color white is important because it signifies that she is representative of something beyond herself. White is symbolic of innocence, purity, and goodness. Which deeply contrasts against the all black attire wore by both men in the beginning of the video. Black usually symbolizes power, evil, and mystery. There are two drastic color changes that happen throughout the video. At 1:56 the older man is seen wearing a red leather jacket, which changes the overall interpretation of the behavior his character from powerful to dangerous. And at 3:33 the younger man is seen giving his jacket to the woman, which reveals his grey under shirt. Grey is a neutral color that depicts compromise and transition. This is the first big transition the young man takes to go from abductor to rescuer. She looks up at him with temptation and hesitation because she is not sure what has washed over him and convinced him to change his ways. The young woman’s internal confusion is expressed through the colors that now cover her body. Her innocence is reliant on the power of the young man to fight against his colleague and help free her from this situation he has put her in.

After the exchange of the jacket the dynamic between all of the characters’ changes very drastically and very abruptly. As the older man storms back, from an assumed phone call with the girl’s parents, he finds the younger man has betrayed him and begun to defend the girl and help her fight for her freedom. Unlike the wave, Amber Run chooses to put these next scenes at a faster pace to increase the chaos so the overall message to fight for what you want is displayed, instead of the viewer focusing their attention on the details. The lyrics, “And I’ll use you as a focal point, so I don’t lose sight of what I want”, explains what is happening inside of the young man’s head. He has focused all of his attention on the girl to make sure she does not receive any further harm from the older man. For some people love is something that takes time to build up to its full potential, and for others it is easy to recognize love’s potential and dive in full force. Both of these entrances to love are displayed between the two younger characters. The young man slowly builds up his trust from the girl by making sure she has shoes to protect her feet in the woods, making sure she has pants to protect what little bit of dignity she has left, and eventually making sure she is warm by giving her his jacket. He tested the waters to make sure he could manipulate it to work in favor of the girl by waiting for the older man to leave before starting their escape.

There is an overall eerie sense of Stockholm syndrome from this video since it depicts a young woman being kidnapped from her home then eventually falling in love with one of her abductor’s. But because love acts as an unpredictable wave of conflicting emotions, the lyrics “I found love where it wasn’t supposed to be”, are proposed to make sense of the situation. Neither character expected to find love in the midst of this horrendous scenario. So what about this situation allowed love to form as an acceptable component? Love is something that people have no control over, and they cannot choose when it is acceptable, because love is like water. It is a force of nature that has an unimaginable amount of power. Much like water people have no control over the power and impact love can have. It is never something that is going to be transparent because there are too many components involved that are vital to keeping a love alive. It is about reshaping two people to fit together based on what the heart desires. Still there is no control over the heart. The heart is its own enormous ocean that has to be discovered and explored for a period long time before there is a glimpse of understanding of its true depth and magnitude. So the two characters made an unimaginable discovery by finding each other while in search for something completely different.
