Mike Posner’s song, Please Don’t Go became an instant hit in 2010. The story of this song is about a boyfriend knowing that he messed up and hoping his girlfriend will not leave him the next day. This is like a typical relationship for many people, the guy messes up, the girl gets mad and decides if she should leave him or not. But like every relationship when the girl leaves, the guy knows he made a mistake and wished he could get her back. In Mike Posner’s music video he portrays the relationship that went wrong and that the guy is just remembering all the good times he had with his girlfriend and hopes that she would stay with him. Please Don’t Go is a sad song, which shows that one mistake can end a relationship and you do not know what you have until it is gone.

In Mike Posner’s music video Please Don’t Go; one of the opening scene is Mike waking up with no one with him. This shows that his girlfriend has left him and the start of him regretting his mistakes will begin. The image they used of Mike waking up they took with a medium shot. The reason for this is that they need enough of him to get him to look over next to him and see that there is no one with him. They used a little bit of contrast in this photo by making everything a different color but nothing really stands out. The use of the black lamp above his head could show his negative thoughts about this conflict and shows how sad he is at the moment. The photograph uses a diegesis gaze to show us Mike is only paying attention to where his girlfriend was supposed to be sleeping. As soon as Mike saw she wasn’t there his face just dropped from happy to sad. No one wants to see bad news as soon as they wake up and that is what exactly happened to Mike that morning. Mike says in his song, “I feel the sun creepin’ up like tick tock. I’ll try to keep you in my head but if not. We’ll just keep running from tomorrow”(Posner), which means that Mike is still sleeping right now and the sun is about to rise. He is still thinking about his girl and hoping that she is still with him, if not he will not want to wake up then. Mike is trying to avoid anything that will show his girlfriend leaving and when he wakes up and saw she was not there. It killed him a little bit and wished that she was still with him.

The second picture I picked was a close up of Mike’s girlfriend at the time. The photo was a memory he had just looking at her when she was driving. Mike’s imagining how perfect he had it before he screwed it up. The director used an extreme close up shot for this image because he wanted to show how beautiful the girl was, and nothing is as beautiful as the face. The director uses a lot of lighting to make this image better. He uses his light source from the bottom to the top to make her face pop better and make her face contrast from the background better. He wanted to make her face the main point of the image and he did that very well. By making her face bright and everything else dull, he contrasts the image so all you would see is the girl. This picture also uses a diegesis gaze, because the girl is driving at the moment. She is looking at the road right now and laughing at something Mike probably said. This is the happy part of the song of Mike remembering everything they had together and everything he would be losing if she would leave. Mike knows now that he does not want to see her leave because she completes him and he would want to see her the next day.

This song became an instant hit in 2010 because of its lyrics and the story. It was a story a man messing up and hoping that his girlfriend would forgive him and would not leave him the next morning. Mike uses scenes of the past memories he had with her and had two scenarios. One was if she did leave he would be really upset and be a little depressed. And the second scenario is if she staid. Mike is trying to prove a point that men mess up once and a while and do not recognize what they have until it is gone. He was so happy when he was with his girlfriend. But when she debates on leaving him, he begs her to please stay and do not leave. He would be miserable without her. The scenes work perfectly with the lyrics because it told the whole story on what was happening. It showed him waking up and seeing that no one was with him and if he knew that he would be sleeping until tomorrow hoping that his girlfriend will be there. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone does not know what they got until it is gone. Mike realizes what he had lost and wished that it would have never happened.

Mike Posner wrote a brilliant song, which made people recognize to be grateful for what they have; they never know when they are going to lose it. This song became a hit because it showed the regret of Mike on what he did and wished he could have done something different to keep his girlfriend with him. As soon as we lose something we care about, we would do anything to get it back. And Mike shows that he would do anything to see his girlfriend with him again. People should keep what they have close to them because they will never know if one day it will be gone.
