Friends are one of the most important aspects of life as human beings. Friends bring us all kinds of emotions. They make us happy and they keep our spirits up through hard times in our lives. Since friends play such a big role in our life one of the hardest things to overcome is losing a friend because they are not there to help guide you through this devastating time in your life. No one ever wants this to happen, because they mean so much to us, but sooner or later everyone will have to deal with this. Whether you have lost your dog, our a friend from school due to some tragic accident it saddens you deeply beyond relief. In life one has to cope with loss and different people have different means of doing so. Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again music video is about coping with the loss of a friend in life. In Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again music video the artists use certain shots to contribute to the theme which is dealing with sadness due to the loss of a friend in life.

Close up shots contribute to the theme of this music video by emphasizing the emotions of the characters, which are caused by losing a friend, at an up close and personal level. In a close up the character is brought directly into the foreground of the scene. The mid-ground and background do not play much of a role in the shot because the emphasis is placed solely on the character in the frame. A Close up shot is used in Khalifa and Puth’s See You Again music video at the 0:17 timestamp. This shot shows sorrow and sadness in the face of the character (Charlie Puth). This shot highlights the sorrow in his half open eyes and lips. If this shot was not done as a close up the viewer might end up focussing on something other than the emotions in the man's face such as the cars in the background or the city skyline. This would take emphasis off the character’s emotions and this would make the scene make less of an impact because it would be less dramatic. This scene being a close up allows the viewer to feel an emotional connection because they can see the sadness in the man’s face. This shot also helps the reader relate to the man because most people know what it feels like to be sad because they are dealing with a loss. This close up causes a connection between the viewer and the character in frame. It reminds them of a loss they went through, or it hurts them to see someone who is going through a rough patch in their life.

Long shots are used artistically to contribute to the theme of this music video by emphasizing how the characters feel/are alone after losing their friends. In Khalifa and Puth’s See You Again music video a long shot is used at the 1:41 timestamp to emphasis the aloneness of Puth’s character. This shot is used to show the area surrounding Puth’s character. In this scene you see the entire body of the character Puth is playing in the foreground. In the mid ground you see three cars pointing towards the man. In the background you see the sun shining down on Puth from the top of the skyline. The long shot helps emphasize how one of the steps in dealing with losing a friend is dealing with a sense of aloneness. This shot shows the impact on the man’s life from losing his friend. When you lose a friend you do not prepare for that, it happens at an instance. At an instance you are left alone with no one but yourself to process this difficult and painful information. Although the long shot does not directly convey emotion like the close up shot does, the long shot sets a scene in which the viewer can interpret the clear message which is overcoming loneliness and dealing with the loss of a friend in his life.

Medium shots are used in this music video to contribute to theme because they add a sense of realness to the video. A medium shot is used at the 2:24 second time stamp. In the foreground you see a man from the waist up looking at the camera and in the background you see the ocean. The medium shot eliminates the mid-ground and places emphasis directly on the character in frame. All of the scenes/frames of this video are effective and contribute to the theme, but a medium shot makes you feel like you are engaging in a conversation with the reader. This scene makes you as the viewer feel the character’s pain of losing a friend because it appears that they are talking directly to you. In this shot you see the emotions clearly on the face of the man in the shot, but the emotions are not seen as up close and personal as the emotions of a close up.

In Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again music video the artists use certain shots to contribute to the theme which is dealing with sadness due to the loss of a friend in life. Many different shots are used throughout the video. The most important and dramatic shot used to contribute to the theme were a close up, a long shot, and a medium shot. A close up allows the viewer to see the emotions of the character in frame at a very up close and personal level because the face of the character is all they see. A medium shot allows the viewer to feel as if they are in a conversation with the character in frame, and this feeling contributes to the theme because it makes the viewer feel as if they personally understand the struggle the character is going through because they see it in their body language and they feel as if they have been told this information directly from the character. Lastly, a long shot contributes to the theme because it allows the character to see that a part of dealing with the sadness and sorrow caused by losing a friend is to have to deal with the feeling of being alone. All of these shots work together in order to contribute to the theme and allow the viewer to feel the emotion of the men who are present in these scenes.
