Art is something that everyone can connect to, whether it's music, a painting or picture, or even nature. It causes emotion; forces you to feel something whether its happiness or misery, and tells stories that people can relate to. In this particular photograph, a child is trying to help his alcoholic father stand up. This photograph can create connections to many people as they too could have gone through the same struggles in their lives as they fought the fight between right and wrong. In this photograph, visual elements express the ongoing struggles between good and bad.

The element of color emphasizes the battle between good and bad. In the photograph, the drunk father is wearing black. The color black represents gloom and misery, which indicates that the father is consumed with the dark influence of alcohol. The color also creates a sense of despair throughout the picture. On the other hand, while the father is wearing black, the child is wearing a jacket in which the sleeves are half white and half red. The color white represents purity and cleanliness, while red represents love and life. This is important because these colors characterize the child as innocent and loving towards the father, who has been overpowered by bad influences. The father and child contrast each other not only in the color that they wear, but also in their representation. The father represents the idea that bad influences can and will consume a person, while the child represents the glimpse of hope and happiness that is needed to break away from the darkness. In the midst of the contrasting colors, there is a pop of grey that is the father's shirt. Grey is a neutral color, it is neither black nor white; however, the closer it gets to black, the darker it is, and the closer it is to white, the purer it is. In this context, the child is tugging at the grey shirt as he tries to pull his father up off of the street. This action exemplifies the grey shirt becoming more white and pure as the child tries to pull him away from the darkness that is within himself. Not only does the element of color highlight the battle between good and bad, but also the element of symbolism.

Another factor that further emphasizes the battle between good and bad is symbolism. One of the more dominant elements in the photograph is the bright red fence in the background. A fence is built to protect what is kept within the barrier and to keep the bad and dark things out. However, the fence in the photograph is crooked and has gaps between the panels. The crooked panels of the fence are a symbol for the crooked love and relationship between the father and son. Usually, parents have an ongoing worry about their children and need to know if they are safe from the bad things in life. In the photograph, the roles have switched. The father act as a child as he sits on the street, drunk and helpless, as the child acts like a father figure as he looks out for his father and tries to save his him from the dark influences the has taken over. The child looks out for his father and tries to keep him safe and protected, however, the bad influences have already consumed the father. The gaps between the panels are a symbol of the dark influences that have gotten through the protective barrier and to the father. Through the love, happiness, and strength that was represented by the bright red fence, outside influences were able to push through and attach to the father. The symbolism of the fence is a big element that helps portray the battle between good and bad, as well as, the element of lines.

Lines are an element that effect the photograph and helps portray the battle between good and bad. The photograph itself is taken at an angle which creates that one side of the picture is tilted down, and the other side of the picture is tilted up, conveying a hill. This creates the effect that the father's bad influences are gravitating him towards more darkness, and further away from the only hope that he has of battling and winning the fight against the darkness that has taken over, the child. The father's own struggles are pulling him away from the child, who is willing to fight and give the father much needed love and happiness. This is important because it shows the uphill battle that one needs to fight in order to overcome their struggles in life and finally reach happiness and peace. Not only do lines help portray the battle between good and bad, but also position.

Position is a key element that helps portray the battle between good and bad. The father is sitting, slouched over on the ground, while the boy is standing up trying to pull at his father. the father is in a position of defeat and shame, and almost helpless and limp like a rag doll. His eyes are averted away from the child, and down towards the ground. This creates the sense that is is too late for the boy to try and help because the father has already been so consumed with the dark influence of alcohol. However, the child's eyes are locked and focused on the father. He is not willing to give up because he is standing with bent legs and arms grabbing the father shirt as he is about to use all of his strength in getting the father to stand up and continue fighting his internal fight with alcohol. The child is determined to help his father towards the good in life. Another important factor is the since the father and child are facing each other, the audience cannot see their faces, which indicates that this could be anyone's battle.

In the photograph, the visual elements of color, symbolism, lines, and position express the battle between good and evil. This photograph is able to tell a story between and father and child that a lot of people can relate to. A photograph is simply a moment in time. It tells a story of one moment in a person's life, not one's entire life. In the battle between good and bad, bad cannot win, but neither can good because it is simply just one moment in one's life. The battle between good and bad is an ongoing war.
