The American Civil rights movement was lead by brilliant people such as Carmichael that had a specific idea for what they wanted to get out of there revolution. Without research into it, it would be impossible to understand what he is saying in his speech Black Power. Upon reading into the topics that he hints on, it became clear that the movement was much more then just blacks fighting for equality. When a person or entire race is being oppressed it is their right and duty to stand up in what they believe in. At first glance most whites probably don't like the civil rights movement, but after one researches he will realize that this party was standing up for what was right by pushing the government to realize that the only way this world was to get better is to stop poverty in which violence breeds.

The point of Carmichael's Black Power speech was to tell the people just how unfair it is that they have be treated the way they have and for so long. No man or race for that matter should have ever been so demoralized in the way they were. People are not created evil, they are born into it and that is exactly what white liberals have done for generations. Its was then time for the blacks to take action and fix the standard of what was normal. It was never the point to integrate blacks into society as much as it was for blacks to show the whites that they they deserve to be on an equal level with them: "we were never fighting to integrate, we were fighting against white supremacy" (Carmichael 250). All men are born free and for so long whites had enslaved blacks after they were born. The United States had created a place where laws were set for whites to obey and any bill that was created due to civil rights, was actually just stating their god given rights. These bills were not crested to give blacks their rights, more so as it was a way for whites to deal with the inabilities they had amongst themselves.

This sense of power where it should not be in white communities all starts with the government. This country for so long has tried to rule the world, taking advantage of all the less fortunate countries. This country is trying to be god and rule over everyone, but we aren't and should not think that way. The government has used democracy as shield for dong whatever it wants for so long and it is just not right. Politics at this point in America were all wrong in saying they were going to a place to bring good, when in fact they would leave with the god things which left the third world country in a worse sate: "The missionaries would come with the bible, and we had the land. When they left, they had the land and we still had the bible." (Carmichael 252). The States thought they were civilized when in fact they were actually the uncivilized ones as the articles back up. Carmichael's speech unleashes on the government and teaches the people just stupid it is to create a barrier between cultures that ultimately only starts violence.

The first article that I read was published during these hard times and focuses on the violence the black race had to go through as the title hints "Violence and History." Racism was supposedly ended with the civil war but it was actually just as prevalent as ever in the late 1960s: "violence is as American as cherry pie" (Pinkner 51). I never really paid much attention to why blacks even today commit so much crime, but after reading this article it all made since. It goes into detail and makes the reader realize what Carmichael was saying as he just rubbed the tip of the iceberg on violence. Black violence has always puzzled me and that is part if why I picked this article too research, which I am so glad I did. The whole point of this article is to tie together that the reason blacks at the time committed so much crime is because they were so underprivileged and had to resort to violence as a last ditch effort to survive. Whites had passed so many laws preventing blacks from rising up into society disabling them from getting steady jobs to support themselves. At these times it was rare for any black person to go to college (Pinkner 52). This created so many ghettos and bad neighborhoods just asking for violence and crimes to occur. How could anyone expect blacks not to commit crimes with these harsh conditions? This article does a great job of reasoning that that any man with nothing to loose and everything to gain from violence will reach a point when they feel obligated to resort to these actions. It makes it clear that the only way to fix the high crime rate of the time is to get all people to come together as one. To stop being afraid of another person because they are different color and help them succeed to make this country we live in a better place for us all: "If Americans seriously hope to pacify their own country, they must do nothing less then to abolish ghettos and what they breed: the hopelessness that incites violence" (Pinkner 53). Once we provide all people with meaningful work and create a steady life for them, then they will not need to create violence because they have everything they need. When a person has a good life, there will be no need for starting trouble. This is the exact opposite of what Jim Crow south was trying to do and was backfiring on America by creating a worse place to live. The article and Carmichael are agreeing that the country of the time was not in a good spot. The division of whites and blacks created a barrier that made it unsafe and less productive for the United States. Carmichael said it was time to stand up and take back what blacks are owed, as this article tells the reader how to go about fixing it.

The article totally goes above and beyond what Carmichael is saying, changing the way that I have viewed violent blacks my whole life. It tells the reader to integrate with one another, live with them and want them to succeed just as bad as you do. Create a good place to live for all different kinds of people and unify as one to fight against poverty which will ultimately cease violence as a whole: "When people grow up with one another, work together, learn to know one another, one group will be less likely to fear and hate the other. If there is any way to curb violence, it is for man to study man and start fighting for the other mans survival" (Time 57). Once this country comes together as one as this article is saying, then America will be as successful as it can be. Fighting for everyman success no matter the race which will decrease the unneeded racism this country is filled with to create a less violent peaceful unified atmosphere.

The second article, "From Latin America to Africa: Defining the "World Revolution" in the Black Panther" by Cristina Mislan expands on Carmichael's idea of unifying the world. The Black Panther was the newspaper of Carmichael's Black Panther party which goal was to let the readers know of problems in the world (Mislan 211). It was a unifier to connect all suppressed people on their problems and get the message of standing up out. This article on the newspaper really expands on how in the beginning years of the party, just how much they wanted unity from all walks of life to come together to stand up. It informed the people of the wrong doing of whites and more importantly the government. The goals of the paper were to fight western imperialism and connect black American families with the oppression around the world (Mislan 214). It gave the community a since of hope, that they were not alone and together they could overcome this struggle. Carmichael introduced me to the fact that the civil rights movement and more directly the Black Panthers were not only standing up for the African American community, but all oppressed people around the world. To me this made the view on civil rights a lot more of a big deal and made me come to the realization that these extraordinary people changed the way races interact till the day. Too understand what blacks were doing at the time, especially white people, I think it is important to read an article like that shows just how wrong governments of the time were to minorities. Also that these movements help better all civilizations around the world, not just the United States. This newspaper and others like it helped shape the world socially, politically and economically in a way that is still seen today.

Carmichael's Black Power speech scratched the tip of the iceberg, but upon further research it is clear just how important the American Civil Rights movement was. They were not just fighting for themselves, but for all people to come together as one with equal views to make the world a better place without violence or hate. The world will not get any better if we look at it as black vs white, only when we stop hating and start working together to help everyone despite race is when this world will really find its peace and happiness.
