When your boyfriend breaks up with you, you have two options on your next move: cry and be sad over it, or move on to better and happier things. In Marina and The Diamonds song "Blue," Marina experiences heartbreak, but decides she is not going to crawl into a whole of depression, instead she is going to live her dreams and forget about all sadness. Her music video is easily relatable to a vast majority of people. The music video "Blue" uses realism and distinctive, vibrant design elements to convey the struggle of moving on from the past and how it can display immaturity.

Marina and The Diamonds broadcast realism throughout the music video by relating the lyrics with the text in a way that is creative and visually appealing, but also relates to the viewer. The message of moving on from a despondent event in one's life, to something happier and more fulfilled is an occurrence that is very common in life. In the first few seconds of the video Marina is seen sitting in her car at a carnival looking very stoic like she is upset, but she does not want to show it. The video progresses and Marina's face swiftly changes from stoic to elated and she starts moving her body more instead of sitting still talking or eating cotton candy, which sends a sense of comfort with herself. Exactly at 0:40 seconds into the video when the beat and tempo of the music picks up is when Marina's actions, expressions, and body language quickly evolve. Her progression is a form of realism in relating to the audience's emotions about going through something similar. The music video also appeals to the audience's sense of childishness. By having the setting of the video be at a carnival, Marina was able to entice the audience in by making the background and props all part of something several people experienced during their childhood. It relays the message that while Marina is an adult getting over a heartbreak, she still is acting naive about it like a child. In the music video when Marina says "No, I don't care ... I'm just selfish" she is displaying naivety about saying she is over her ex-boyfriend, but she still wants to spend more time with him. She is contradicting herself and her feelings which is something many people do when going through situations similar to this. Marina says other lines like "I just need to be held when I'm scared" and "I need a man to hold onto" that show signs of dependence which is a child-like quality to possess. Then she also says "Give me a good self esteem" which is something children have because they are so innocent and young that they do not easily get hurt or offended. The music video also uses various types of design technique to display the struggle of moving on.

Vibrant and excessive colors play a large role in this music video. The carnival is full of brightly colored objects like different rides, cotton candy, the fruit stand, and Marina's sparkly outfits. The colors create an essence of innocence which also compliments the lyrics Marina sings. She says she does not "Want to feel blue anymore" and is singing all this as she is riding a ride at the carnival. She captures the role of being childish by singing about how she wants to be "good and pure" like a young child is, and she does this while eating food and riding rides at the carnival, something most kids love to do. The colors add a dominance to the emphasis Marina has on letting go and wanting the qualities most commonly possessed in children. Another way the vibrant colors compliment the lyrics is through the chorus when Marina sings that she does not "Want to feel blue anymore." The word blue can stand for feeling down and dreary so the setting and all of its details refute the whole aspect of feeling blue. Typically, one does not go to a carnival and feel sad. The brightly colored carnival assists with getting Marina's message of innocence and immaturity one can obtain when going through different struggles in his or her life. The sparkly dresses Marina wears are also reminiscent to those that little girls wear to play dress up in. They are very classic, shiny dresses that hold remembrance probably to her childhood because several young girls had exact dresses like those in their closets for playing dress up in and pretending they are adults in. Her makeup is also really dark which shows that even though she is trying to be happy, let loose, and move on, she still is upset deep down inside.

Marina's face has a dark dot under each of her eyes displaying a sense of sadness. She is at a carnival trying to move on and enjoy herself, but she still cannot shake the thoughts of her breakup which still make her feel upset and down. Although by the end of the video she is seen dancing for the last 46 seconds, which sends the message that she is going to shake off her blues and sadness and enjoy herself. It shows that she can pick herself up when she is down and move on, which was her struggle in the beginning. Her struggle to move on is what made her resort back to her childish methods, but she learns to grasp ahold of them and move on from feeling blue.

Marina displays the struggle of moving on and the immaturity it can cause through the colorful design elements and realism of her music video. She displayed a growth in character through her music video, which can be so easily related to real life scenarios similar like the one she was going through. The video presents the struggle of how one is supposed to act and what to do next after a break up. Maybe going to a carnival is one of those things people should do after experiencing that just like Marina did. Or they could always just figure out the best way to move on and continue growing up instead of resorting back to childish methods.
