"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere," said by Carl Sagan; speaks about how crucial imagination is and how people can do things they never could achieve without one. In one of the many comics in Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson, shows how a child can create his own story with his imagination. He is able to dream about being a god-like figure while playing with a few little toys because of his great imagination. Through color and contrast, icons, and the perspective of the reader, the reader sees how the story displays a sort of evil, dark, and haunting comic.

The color and contrast of the comic set the mood of the comic from start to finish. This comic is much different than all of the other Calvin and Hobbes comics, because it uses bright colors and combinations of warm and cool colors. The colors in the pictures are what every child imagines and draws when they think of fire, space, and a god-like force and/or person. The first image is black and white which gives off authoritative, evil, and powerful feeling to the viewer. The colors along with the deep contrast of the colors allows the viewer to picture the darkness and haunting feeling that the author is trying to give off (Infoplease). The next image is yellow and orange which is frequently related to the sun and grabs the viewer's attention. The contrast between the two colors, yellow and orange, makes a person think of fire because fire is a bright yellow and orange color. The fiery second picture and the dark/evil first picture make the viewer think of an evil being that lives in fire much like the devil. The blue and gray in the dark sky in the next picture set a mellow mood over the whole story. In this instance, it is a representative color for the sky and space but it also gives off a depressing and cold feeling because of the shade of blue. The shade of blue is closer to a gray and that is also related to a coldness and depression. The next three images are all fiery red, orange, and yellow but are slightly different from the burning image before. These three images have a different contrast than the one above and they give off a scarier and angry feeling. Most of the images that Calvin is imagining is not what a child would normally think. The last picture shows the bright colors of the child's real world and how his parents do not realize what he is actually thinking.

According to the Webster dictionary definition, an icon is a person or thing that is a representative symbol of something (Merriam- Webster). In this Calvin and Hobbes poem, the viewer sees many icons that can tell the story without even having to read the words. The very first picture, the dark eye, is a haunting image that makes a person feel the haunting eye watching them. An eye is often related to all watching, staring, or overseeing like a god or dictator. The eye relates well to the rest of the comic because every other image in the story can be related back to it. The image following the eye, the person's silhouette inside of a fiery place, is an icon. When most people see a picture of someone burning in the flames in agony, they often relate the image to a hell-like place. Relating back to the first image, the overseeing eye is now assuming the position of a fiery evil god or leader like the devil. The hand reaching out into space is thought of as a powerful being that is large enough to reach out into space and control the biggest things around him like space. The all-seeing eye relates to this picture because both are iconic pictures that are godlike and all powerful. The devilish being in the next picture relates back to the second icon, which is showing the viewer that the god is truly evil. The devil creature is breathing fire is in the next picture and is looking down on his people like an evil dictator. The picture shows people jumping out of a fiery furnace, where the god has most likely put them and is sacrificing them alive. The very last image shows two parents watching a child play which showing innocence. Little do the parents know that the child is imagining him as a god, overseeing all of his people and burning them as sacrifice.

Perspective plays a huge roll when a person is viewing an image, comic, or video. The viewer's perspective of the comic is a dark and haunting. The color and display are both seen as dark and hellish, making the reader feel a dark and haunting feeling. When a person starts reading the comic they see the dark eye that stares right through you in a haunting way. The viewer sees the first image as frightening and intense. As the viewer keeps reading, he sees a devilish creature in the fire which puts a haunting tone on the story. Already the reader is thinking, without even having to read the words, that this is going to be dark and an evil story. The hand in the sky shows that the creature in the story is a controlling figure. The colors in the picture, as said before, give off a colder and depressing feeling which makes the story haunting and more intense. The devilish creature is back but this time he is breathing fire and looking over is territory in anger. As the next images come up the reader continues to think that the creature is evil. The reader sees people burning and is now thinking that this evil god is sacrificing people. The last image displayed is one of two parents looking at their child playing in the next room. The parents are thinking of how sweet the kid is and how he is building is own little world out of his toys. When in reality the child is thinking, if he was god he would be sacrificing his people and oppressing his people.

A child's imaginations can take him to worlds and places that he can create with his mind. The evil, dark, and haunting images in the picture is a display of the Childs imagination and how if he pictures it, it will become real to him. The color and contrast, icons, and perspective of this comic show how without even reading the words on the comic, the viewer is still able to understand what is going on throughout the story.
