This art was a promotional piece for a game called Pokemon Platinum. Pokemon is a series of games where a protagonist goes upon an adventure, capturing and training Pokemon to help the protagonist battle other trainers, collect the eight gym badges, and eventually conquer the elite four and its champion. Platinum is the 15th installment in the franchise and the third installment of Pokemons fourth generation of games. As with past generations, the third installment of the generation is a combination of the two installments before it, giving the game it's own identity compared to its two counterparts. This art provides that feeling of difference with just one look at it. There are three prominent figures in the art, the legendary Pokemon. Legendary Pokemon are Pokemon of great power and importance, and the three in this art are no less. On the left stands Palkia, lord of space, and the legendary Pokemon of the generation four game Pearl. On the right stands Dialga, lord of time, and the legendary Pokemon of the generation four game Diamond. Finally the being in the center is Giratina, guardian of the reverse world, and the focus Pokemon of this game. This art portrays the feeling of darkness and dread created by this pokemon through creative use of focus, contrast, color, and many other artistic techniques.

Let's first begin with the placement of the three most prominent figures Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. Dialga and Palkia take up the foreground of the image with their backs turned towards us, the viewer. This creates the feeling of how little concerned they are with us and more so with the creature situated in the midground. Now Giratina is located in the center of the art, in the midground, for the obvious reason of being the most important part of the art. His position in the art is one of the many things that catches the viewer's attention and keeps it there. He is also ever so higher than the other two, looking down, as to affirm his higher stature and importance. Finally there's the building storm in the background. The arrangement of the clouds, with the darkest clouds circling above Giratina, give a feel of foreboding of what power Giratina holds and what darkness has yet to come.

While these creatures are fictional in nature, their body language still has something to say about what is happening. Starting with Dialga and Palkia, their backs are towards us and eyes focussed on Giratina. This is to draw the viewer's gaze up to the next part of body language to speak of, Giratina's eyes. While Dialga and Palkia's eyes may be locked on him, Giratina does not look down at them but is instead looking at the viewer. You are the challenger, the obstacle in its way and the only one who can stop it. It knows this and locks eyes with you to instill as much fear and doubt as possible. This is the biggest catcher in the art and the one the viewer's eyes will wander back to the most. Then there are Giratina's outstretched tendril 'wings' as it's prepared to throwdown with all its might. These few uses of body language on fictional creatures gives the art much more of an immense looming pressure, as if building up for a final showdown of sorts with the mysterious and dreaded dark power.

The coloring on the Pokemon themselves provide contrast and relevance to one another and what roles they play. Giratina is the guardian of the reverse world, a place steeped in shadow and mystery, and his color match that description. His tendrils are a ghastly mix of purple and black, and his underbelly is black with purple-ish red stripes. His yellow mandible like jaw, and head crest, contrast with the rest of his body to draw more attention to it. Dialga and Palkia are the brighter by comparison coloring to allude to their lesser than dark roles in the story and their own elements of the physical laws of time and space. As with color, contrast can allude to some of the feeling given off by this piece. One is that of fear due to strong contrast of the colors of Giratina to the other two. While Dialga and Palkia are light in color, Giratina is one of darker hues and shades, to show off its more sinister nature. Then the color choice for such things as the clouds in the background and the explosion under Giratina, further emphasize the darkness and dread this creature is creating. The light created by Giratina's emergence from the reverse world, cast long hard shadows on Dialga and Palkia. The helps cement the feeling of looming threat and the standing of Giratina above the two others. Combined this and the little to none empty space in the art, it adds more the whelming feeling that darkness has arrived.

Finally there's the perspective of the viewer in the art. The viewer is an onlooker, one about to witness a truly horrific event and the only one able to do anything about it. They are the one that must challenge and defeat Giratina and, if they fail, many ominous things will happen to the world. Giratina is ready for the challenger, for it knows it can not go unopposed and it's prepared to do what it must to succeed.

This art does a fantastic job of portraying the feeling of darkness and dread effectively with its use of all these artistic elements and the way it presents the Pokemon. The thrill given by the art got many hyped for the coming game and had shown to be extremely effective with the high grossing sales of the game.
