Since industrialization began in the 18th century, humans have been destroying Earth's natural resources. People have found ways to use the resources given to them in a short term convenient manner. There has been little consideration of the long term effects. This in itself is killing what humans call mother nature. This picture portrays this concept in an extremely thoughtful way. First, the entire picture is constructed around contrast and symbolism. Within the contrasts the artist also used elements of color, form, and texture. The contrasts are represented on opposite sides of the image. The left side represents the earth and its life, while the right side depicts how industrialization is killing all that Earth has to offer.

The symbolism in this picture is endless. The gun pointing at mother nature, which has tall buildings on it, represents what is killing mother nature. Theses building represent industrialization. Industrialization has contributed greatly in the amount of pollution released into Earth's atmosphere. The human hand that is holding the gun contains some irony in it. This aspect is included to symbolize the fact that humans are the one "pulling the trigger" to kill mother nature, but at the same time it is burning himself. This shows that humans are not only killing the environment, but it will eventually kill them as well. The hammer on the gun is pulled back to represent that humans are on the verge of actually shooting this fatal weapon. Also, the hazy look on the right side symbolizes the harmful substances that are being produced by industrialization. The dark haze is a lot more prominent directly above the buildings because that is what causes this smog. This smog even travels to the upper left corner of the image and is above mother nature's head. This represents that it is surrounding her and gives the feel that she is being trapped. Therefore, there is nowhere for her to go and she is left staring down the barrel of the gun.

The figure of mother nature contains symbolism as well. Mother nature has a face that can be made out in the image. This is to humanize her. It gives the viewer a sense of reality that once she is killed that she can't come back to life. The figure is in the shape of a woman. The woman contains lots of shape also. This is to represent the beauty that she has to offer. She also contains lots of color. The majority of the colors are green, blue, and a clear. Theses colors are one of the elements used to give her life. The green represents plants when they are alive. The blue and clear initially represent water and light. Water, light, and plants are essential for all life on Earth. The other thing that the water represents is the tears of mother nature. The water appears to be streaming from her eyes.

The element of form best assets this image. On the gun every line is definite and sharp. This is to show the specific structure that buildings have, as well as the consistency of scenery that urbanization is giving Earth. However, mother nature has a much more abstract look. The form of her appears to have movement. She isn't still and this portrays that she has life. The fact that it seems more abstract depicts the variety of scenery within unharmed mother nature. She doesn't contain much of a consistency throughout her figure and this shows how versatile she can be.

Perspective is used to show irony in this image also. The gun is pointing up towards mother nature in a sense that shows that the shooter is smaller than mother nature. This is to show that the shooter is actually a child of mother nature. She created him and has built him up, but now the tables have turned. The child is not supporting his mother, but actually attempting to destroy her. It shows a loss of respect as well as a lack of wisdom. Humans have always had these resources and no longer have respect for them. This shows a lack of wisdom because if the child of mother nature kills her, he can no longer live either.

In conclusion, industrialization accounts for lots of pollution. A study by the World Wildlife Fund shows that over a third of the the natural resources that mother nature offers has been killed by humans over the past thirty years. This picture is to give humans a perspective of exactly what they are doing to their own environment. It uses elements such as symbolism and contrast. The artist incorporated other elements such as color, form, perspective, irony to tell a complete story through one image. Humans are killing mother nature through industrialization and haven't even considered that it will lead to their own destruction as well.
