Using the elements properly in a picture in order to portray the overarching meaning of the advertisement is imperative. The various elements of an advertisement help the viewer understand what point and argument the author is trying to convey and argue. The picture shown does have the elements of an advertisement and it does use them to strengthen the overarching point of the image, but it does not effectively use the elements in order to get the correct meaning across, so that the viewer can become proactive. In this photo, the author is attempting to show the reader that there is a significant elderly suicide rate in our country in the hopeful spirit that some good change can come out of it. The ineffective use of the typography, color palette, and gestalt in this image contributes to the perpetuating cycle of the lives of elderly's being pushed aside and society forgetting their worth as their age increases.

The color palette in this image solely causes the viewer to become uninterested in the image and the overarching meaning. If used correctly the color palette in this picture should help the reader understand the significance and become emotionally connected to the woman in the photo. Besides the red pillow that the woman in this picture is leaning against, this image uses boring colors, which does not help the reader connect to the meaning of the image. The red pillow could potentially be a symbol for her death and the evil in her situation, yet there are no other useful colors in the image that help make the meaning known. The colors simply make the reader see a boring, old woman who is sitting in an ordinary chair knitting her own noose. The colors, such as brown, dark green, and tan add no emphasis on the picture and its objects, and instead makes the reader look away from the colors, which are not appealing, ultimately failing to interest the reader. These colors make the reader uninterested in the photo due to the fact that all of the colors are dull and do not help the reader hone in on the important aspects. In the photo, there is a light that leads the reader's eyes in the shape of a triangle on the woman's face. The head of the woman is at the top of this triangle, which could signify the woman's head the top of a pyramid. This is significant because it shows her emotions and her mental state as the most important, which could be a potential reason for why people forget the lives of the elderly. This light is also major because it is a means of showing the reader the main element in the photo, yet there is not just one main element in this photo. If the author would have put the light on both the noose and the woman, the reader would have had the opportunity to connect the two elements, but instead, the author stopped the light right in the middle area between the woman and the noose, which causes the reader to ignore the woman's noose and the problem presented. If the color palette was used correctly, the reader might also see the woman sitting on a black or red chair to signify that she is sitting on her death chair. The whole image might contain darker and more meaningful colors and the text could stand out in order to catch the viewer's eye and give them inspiration. Instead, due to the poor color palette, the reader is lead to forget about the image and the meaning, ultimately forgetting about the elderly population and the suicide problem that surrounds their community. The wallpaper that is on the wall behind the woman should allow the reader to gather some meaning because the print has Fleur de Lis', which are known to signify perfection, light, and life. If this meaningful wallpaper was used correctly, the reader could have made a connection to the print, but the individual Fleur de Lis are extremely faded and hard to recognize and the background is tan; therefore, the reader cannot understand this importance of life, which perpetuates the cycle of lives being forgotten. The poor choice in colors in this photo hinders the reader from noticing any symbols in this photo, which does not allow the reader to obtain any significance.

In this image, one of the most troubling aspects is that the reader is not able to see the typography, which would help them understand the overarching meaning of the photo. The reader is not provided with the necessary information because the sentence which states, "Over 50% of all suicides are committed by senior citizens," is at the very bottom right hand corner of the advertisement in small font. The typography would allow the viewer to understand the troubling statistic if the creator would have placed the typography somewhere else on the page with bigger font, for instance, across the bottom of the image in a size twenty font instead of in the corner in a size ten font. An advertisement should catch the eye of the viewer and provide meaning quickly and sufficiently; yet this advertisement does not allow the viewer to obtain any meaning. The creator of this advertisement put the font in white, which does help the text standout against the background colors; however, the white typography is placed against a black background in the shape of a box, which blends in with the dark flooring. Because of this, the reader can easily get lost and has a more difficult time distinguishing the text and its connotation. Due to the ineffective use of this typography, the reader pushes the lesson of this advertisement and the elderly's lives aside. This is problematic because the author is creator is attempting to argue that society does not care about the elderly community and sometimes over looks their lives, and because of this, society should step up and prevent this large and increasing percentage of suicides within the elderly community. Because of the ineffectual elements created by the author, the viewer yet again pushes this advertisement aside and the lives of the elderly's. The content and meaning in this photo is not easily visible and understandable, which should be the sole obligation of this advertisement with regards to the typography.

The job of the gestalt in this photo should help the viewer obtain the overall meaning and objective of this image. Through the use of the various elements, specifically the color palette and the typography, the viewer is not able to get the meaning to the potential that was intended. The reader's eyes go from the woman, to the noose, and then right off of the page. Through the layout of this image, the reader dismisses any meaning that they could have potentially seen. The author was trying to argue that people forget the lives of senior citizens too easily due to various reasons and that they are the reason for the high suicide rate in their community. The gestalt and unity in this photo is entirely what strengthens the author's idea that people let go of the lives of the elderly's because they let go of this photo due to its ineffectiveness and lack of unison, yet it is not able to convince the viewer that action should be taken in order to halt this significant problem and that awareness should be created.

Ultimately, the elements of this advertisement do support the argument that people tend to set aside the lives of the elderly community, yet it does not allow the readers to become connected to this woman in the photo. Due to the ineffective elements, specifically the color palette, the typography, and the gestalt, the viewer cannot retain the meaning of the advertisement, and yet again forgets all thoughts about the elderly lives that are being argued for in this image. Unbeknownst to the author, this advertisement wrongly encourages the reader to continue this constant cycle, which is dismissing the lives of the elderly's and continuing to be preoccupied with their own lives and what is occurring in the younger generations.
