In Don Delillo's short story, the author narrated the story in a simply direct way to show how real this video is. He shortened the sentences to make it look like a background narrator who was describing the whole short story. The author tries to convey a message that many people will spend time and money to watch the horror movie or some materials which thesubjects are very violent because all these footage can amuse them. People watch the Discovery or Animal Channel for those documentaries. The contents include some pictures like lions eat a deer, elephants fight for their territories or something are disturbing. However, the main point is, this footage was real. They are crude and straight, they are things that really occur in life. Like the author mentioned, "The tape is superreal, or maybe underreal is the way you want to put it. And this is another reason why you keep on looking. The tape has a searing realness." (The Carolina reader, p.61) By looking at the man in this story who called his wife to watch the upsetting video, we can see the dark side of our humanity, which most readers do not noticed, this is important because we usually ignore the dark side inside of us and dismiss the natural desire to the bloody or awful images.

The dark side of the videotape is about the deepest secret that exists in our humanity. The man who was watching the video called his wife to come and see the moment when the man in the car was shot. Why he did this? Because the video is so real. The dead is not planned, it happened without any clue or any sign, which this part triggered the deepest part of the man. We have seen too many fancy movies in the theater, a simple action on your computer can easily get you a bunch of horrible and bloody movies or videos. But there are just something missing. People all knew these videos are all fake. The greedy of our humanity deep down in our mid asked more excitement, so once the man found out that this normal video showed up an unexpected death of the normal man, it brought up the excitement which motivated the guy to call his wife for this extremely "interesting" moment of the footage. Although it might only be a kind of action that presents how much the man wants to share the excitement to his beloved, but the truth was that his wife had no idea what he was doing. Such a bloody and crucial video can easily ruin someone's day, but the man in the story seemed not to care about the consequences. Besides, the man repeated the video over and over again. It was not only about sharing, but a kind of addicted. An addiction that he enjoyed the moment of the sudden death. Not only the man would addicted to the moment, everyone might all received the same feeling when they watched the film. For example, in this generation, almost everyone has a smartphone. When a terrible car accident happened, if someone called the police, then others people who around the scene will start to take out their smartphone and taking pictures or videoing the accident scene. This is not a make-up story or a no evidence guessing. It is real. Which was posted on the newspaper once and even on the television. We do have the dark side of humanity, the desire to watch those upsetting materials. Things went more interesting or more exciting when it happened right in front of you. Because it was so real, so authentic, and so unexpected. The author used a story to tell us a truth of human life in a tactful way, no matter how uncomfortable the video is, we watch it anyway.

The little girl who recorded the whole crime. The reason that made her become famous was the other example to explain the dark side of this story. The author mentioned that the little girl was famous because the video was recorded by her. She was famous without her name or her looking, she lived in people's mouth but what made the girl so special was only because she was the one. The one who recording all the crime. In other words, what really matters is who make the video but not who the person is. The viewpoint was real and actual, but also ended the story in a cool way by defining such a worthless meaning to the existence of the little girl. The character that the girl presented was just a cameraman. Her innocence was describing equally as those who watched the same video. That is the coolest and darkest part. In my opinion, all of us were focused on how real the video was or how unexpected the death was. But to my surprise, we felt little sorrow and pity for the girl after we read the story. The excitement that filled our mind was like a drug that spread in our blood, the drug was so poison that we could barely felt the sense of sympathy to the little girl. Somehow, we were completely brought into the story and forgot how innocent the girl was, or, it was only because she was not a naive child but a cameraman to us. Again, the crush feeling of excitement captivated our attention and made our mind blunt. Just like the author said in the paragraph, "like an innocent fool in a silent movie". (The Carolina reader, P.63) The author played down the importance of the girl and deemphasized on the truth that she was only a little girl but emphasized on the equal innocence between the girl and all the people who had seen the footage.

However, there was another argument appears. The video was accidently recorded, the girl was innocent and may be the most innocent people in that whole event. But when the sudden death occurred, the girl didn't stop taping, actually, she kept the tape rolling for a while. There were two possible reason to explain. Maybe she was shocked by the bloody accident so that she was unable to realize what was just happening, she took a while to figure out the actual situation and then she stopped taping. Or the dark side of her humanity was triggered, too. But she was too young to realize what made her keep recording the whole crucial accident. The collapse of the girl's naive could also be notified by the other part of the story. Initially, the camera was a tool that created good memory on one's family. Camera, the character of the story was designed to be simple and warm, until the day that it recorded all the crime and became a character which was labeled as a machine of recording crime. What happened to this camera was so alike to the little girl. They all started at a warm, simple and naive characters but ended up as a character of the victims of this crime.

The word 'real' is the most recurred word in the story. The significance of the word goes without saying.

As the keyword of the short story, the author used a lot of space to explain how 'real' it was, so as to make the readers have a sense of identity to the story. The real crime happened. The real video was published. The real dark side of the humanity. The real of the sudden death. The video was so entertaining because of its realism.

The modern society is cooler than before, our potential greedy and lack of indifference is gradually becoming a monster that will eventually destroy the peace of the world. The whole story is like a prophecy, telling the exact same things that happen in this generation. People use phones and cameras to record everything around us, just like the little girl, we all have no idea what is going to happen next; people who accidently record a crime or something terrible occur, they won't stop filming; people spend time and money on those upsetting materials to entertain themselves, just like the man who repeated the video again and again.

The only thing differs from now to the past is people who record the video will not be famous anymore. Even the name seems not important anymore because of the convenient of the network. People only care about what they want, as long as the subject amuses them, less of us will notice the sorrow behind the happiness.
