Every person has their own opinion of how one should act when presented with a violent or painful situation involving another person. Many people enjoy taking pleasure from viewing the suffering of others as is the case in Black Mirror. All the people who pay to watch the girl get tortured thoroughly enjoy it and they have a decent reason as to why they do. Similarly, in the real world today, people take enjoyment in the pain of others and they do so if there is a just reasoning behind it. For example, people go and witness an execution of an inmate because it has significant meaning to them to see the man or woman killed. They have a reasoning behind it, as is the case with people attending violent sporting events as well. They buy tickets and view the event for entertainment purposes and they know the fighters enjoy doing it to which makes it easier for them to enjoy it. With proper reasoning also comes a proper means of viewing, which in today's world includes brand new technology and smartphones. This new and improved technology spreads these violent events all over and increases the audience. With proper reasoning and a means to spread the suffering across the globe, enjoyment from the suffering of others becomes prevalent in the minds of many and rids the minds of any thoughts of wrongdoing.

Many people have wondered why taking pleasure from pain has been popular in the world today, just as it was in the past. People don't simply enjoy someone else's suffering for no reason at all. There is always a reason for people's madness and those reasons or methods vary. The people in Black Mirror have very valid reasoning behind their involvement with the humiliation of the offender. She filmed the burning of a child so they believe that the punishment matches the crime. Many people believe that whatever someone does to others, they should have done unto them. John C. Dvorak, Editor and Publisher of Dvorak Uncensored, makes this exact point in response to broadcasting the Saddam Hussain execution when he states, "[T]he Saddam execution should be broadcast to the USA market via pay-per-view (PPV) and the proceeds distributed to the families of the dead and wounded soldiers. Apparently the local TV folks in Iraq will have cameras ready and it may be broadcast there. So it's an easy process" (Executions). Saddam ruined the lives of many Americans with his army's killing of many American soldiers during the Iraqi War. Many families are permanently devastated because of Saddam and Dvorak is in the same boat as the people who signed up for the tour in Black Mirror. People deserve to watch the suffering of the ones who made them suffer because they have a certainly valid reason to.

The reasoning behind taking pleasure from torture may not just be revenge as it was in Black Mirror and the Saddam execution. An audience's reasoning may be for pure entertainment which is the sole reason for most fans at a UFC or MMA event. The fighters voluntarily put their bodies on the line and the fans appreciate that and enjoy it. People purchase pay-per-view matches and attend these events because of the versatility of the different fighters and the unique aspect which is there is something new to see in every match. Jonathan Snowden points out this versatility in UFC matches when he says, "The technique involved in MMA, the fact that a fighter can employ dozens of different strategies and try to go about winning in so many different ways, the fact that all of those strategies have counter-strategies (and those counters have counters), [ ] These are the things that have always made me feel that MMA is the most exciting sport in the world to watch" (MMA). The matches grasp and retain the audience's attention throughout the entirety of the match. The tour given in Black Mirror also maintains a sort of versatility in the way that they bring the subject to many different situations and scare her in several different ways. It brings a sense of involvement to all the members of the audience when they can interact with the girl in different places. For example, when they can buy the red sponges and throw them at the glass case the girl is trapped inside, it brings about a sense of entertainment that is derived from involvement. Both revenge and entertainment can channel enjoyment from pain just by acting as a basis of reasoning behind the violent events which can be viewed very quickly and widely due to new inventions in the technological fields.

New inventions in media and technology have made it easier for people to gain access to view and explore different violent events that happen across the world. In Black Mirror the tour guests are specifically told to take as many pictures and videos as they desire and want. This serves as a platform for the expansion of the woman's suffering. Back in early 1900s, people would flock to one town from many miles away to simply view an execution lasting only a few seconds. An exact moment from a similar situation from a public execution goes on to point out, "Public executions were ended in 1936, after a crowd of some 20,000 climbed telephone poles, stood on rooftops and jammed streets in Owensboro, Kentucky to watch the hanging of an African-American man, Rainey Bethea, convicted of raping his white employer" (Executions). Now with the presence of social media and smartphones, people can be sent videos and view those videos of violent activity happening to others very quickly and easily which makes it simpler and more enjoyable. No true effort is needed to see this and you can easily communicate about it with friends. People don't want to work too hard anymore to experience pure enjoyment so now that it comes straight to them it makes it easier to experience satisfaction.

UFC and MMA matches can be viewed simply from the comfort of your home just as violent videos can be done the same on social media when one is just lying in bed. Some of these matches can be viewed for free on basic cable channels in every home and family setting. Pay-per-view matches require a little more effort but that effort is simply paying a monetary fee to your provider. Technology has been significantly modernized and its capability has severely increased. There were no high-definition cameras or even color televisions back in the early 1900's to enable a fan to view a violent act that includes someone's suffering from the couch in his or her own living room. UFC promotors also book events all over the country to make it possible to reach out to all audience members and to make it more convenient to attend a match. They bring the events to their fans to increase enjoyment and pleasure. However, the attention of many people, especially the teenage generation, is totally wrapped around technology, which includes their phones and social media. As is the case with the specific image popping up on all monitor screens in Black Mirror, just viewing a picture or video once can totally take over the mind and basically brainwash a person. People enjoy easy accessibility and being a part of the majority which perfectly explains how new technological capabilities can increase enjoyment from watching pain and suffering and increase audience size and involvement.

People today enjoy watching the suffering of others on many different platforms and do so for an array of possibilities. The key question that needs to be asked is why people enjoy it so much. They enjoy it for their own unique and specific reasoning, such as they wanted to witness revenge for a past wrongdoing or they wanted to watch simply for the entertainment aspect, and that it is easily accessible and can be viewed with the touch of a button. Black Mirror portrays how technology and capturing phone videos is taking over not only this country but the whole world. It also shows that people love to make sick and twisted people get a taste of their own medicine and experience pain just as they had dished out to victims previously. This can be seen in real-life situations today just as can be seen in the fictional episode of Black Mirror. People who receive the death sentence can be seen receiving it through a window by a small group of people making sure revenge and justice are being enacted. With the UFC and MMA, technology and video has become a staple because people pay to watch from the comfort of their home all the time. They have easy access and no real effort is needed to experience joy. Through these specific reasons, people maintain a sense of humor and delight from seeing others getting scrutinized or from seeing them experience some aspect of suffering.
