Every time we read a book, an article or any text for that matter we take what we have read in that text and use it for the interpretation of other texts we read. This how we become smarter and obtain knowledge, by being able to take what we know and apply it to information given to us. We do this with out thinking, it becomes instinct for example when someone uses a sports reference to help explain something, it is taking knowledge from some place else and using it to interoperate or understand a completely different subject. We are taught from when we are very young to apply what we learn to other things in life and which is why when we come across problems in our every day life we know how to solve them, not because we learned how to solve that specific problem but because we have been given the tools to figure it out for our selves. We can use "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner to help us understand the events that took place in "A Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, by close reading each text we can see how confinement, a lack of attention, and love, can drive a person to their breaking point.

Keeping a person to the confinement of rules set only for them has never proved to have a positive impact on the confined individual's life especially when it is a man that is controlling how a woman lives her life. In each of these pieces of work we see one women who is under the law of her husband in "Story of an Hour" and by her father in "A Rose for Emily". Allowing the audience to look at the impact of confinement and the effects it can have on a young girl and a married woman. As we take a close look into "A Rose for Emily" we can clearly tell that because her father would not let her socialize with other men mainly because he thought they they were not good enough for his daughter shielding her from developing social skills and finding a man who she could deem is good enough for her. Which ultimately leads to Miss. Emily killing the one man she loved and keeping him from ever leaving her. We can use this to help us understand the context of "A Story of an Hour" and how Mrs. Mallard truly feels about her husband which is that he is confining her to a boring life where she can not do any thing with out he approval of her husband. We can come to this conclusion by looking at the way Miss Emily was treated by her father and there fore draw the conclusion that her mother was most likely treated the exact same way much like Mrs. Mallard. It is one thing to keep one sheltered from the rest of society because you are scared to loose them it is a whole other thing to keep them from eventually experiencing it for themselves. Which is why we can use "A Rose for miss Emily" to understand why Mrs. Mallard wants to be free from her confinement. She wants to experience the world for her self.

As a society we need attention to keep motivated and to reach for what ever goal we have set for our selves whether it is a family member noticing your hard work or a complete stranger complementing you on how you look, we need that to keep moving through life. It is when you take away that attention and send somebody up to a room or keep them in a house away from that attention is when you start to run into issues like in both of our stories. In "A Rose for Emily" Miss Emily barley socialized with anybody in the town due to when she was a little child her father kept her from doing so because he thought that she was above the rest of them. But with out this attention we need as people to live everyday Emily became awkward and never really learned hoe to interact with people other than her servants. Miss Emily rarely left her house after her father passed which shows that you need the attention and support of society not just one person who kept you from all of that. In "The Story of an Hour" we can see by what we learned in "A Rose for Emily" that Mr. Mallard probably did not let Mrs. Mallard out of the house much because of the way men controlled women back then, she looked at the outdoors like it was a picture not a real tangible place just through the window. When you look at a picture you feel like you are somewhere that you are really not, in Mrs. Mallards case she is looking at the real thing but she can not go there, due to the communistic rule of her husband, this shows that she is not social and does not get much time outside if she is looking at the tops of trees like they are diamonds. We know that Mr. Mallard does not treat Mrs. Mallard right from the way she reacts to his apparent death, instead of grieving and becoming angry she is filled with joy and feels as if a Burdon has been lifted off of her shoulders clearly showing to the reader that this was not a good situation that poor Mrs. Mallard was in and has now turned into a positive and joyous occasion. The reason for Mrs. Mallards lack of attention was this heart diesis that she had and no one wanted to give her any news because they were scared that it might be to much for her heart to handle, there fore most likely upon her husbands request she was to remain in the house to protect her heart. We can see that in both "A Rose for Emily" and "The Story of an Hour" socialization is important for the development of proper skills required for dealing with interaction with other people and how to handle things as they happen in your life.

Love is the most powerful emotion we have in our body; it can make us do anything from move across the world with some one to killing them cold blooded. It does not matter how strong of a person you are once love gets a hold of you there is no turning back. There is no better example of this than in "A Rose for Emily", Miss Emily was deprived of being able to love an other man her entire life because she was so protected by her father that once she found love she was going to do everything in her power to keep that love from going anywhere. At first glance Miss Emily seemed like a harmless sweet lady with no foul intentions but once love got a hold of her, it was able to turn her into a killer. Often times looked at as the nirvana of emotions love is a ruthless thing where no one is immune to its suffocating grip. With out love Miss Emily would never have killed Homer, a man who she loved and wanted to be with forever. Just liked the way Miss Emily killed for love, Mrs. Mallard was killed my love, after Mrs. Mallard has had a chance to realize what her husbands' death meant to her and her life, Mr. Mallard comes walking through the door, he was no where near the wreck and had no idea it has even happened. Once Mrs. Mallard realizes her husband is alive she has a massive heart attack and dies right in front of him of "joy that kills" this is because she was so happy that she was finally free from her husbands' grasp that once she saw him all of the joy in her body was gone and left her for dead. The quote "joy that kills" can be looked at in two ways the first being in "The story of an Hour" and the second from "A Rose for Miss Emily", in Miss Emily, she was so happy that she had to kill home to keep her from ever being sad again. Which is true in both stories at each character is no longer sad, Miss Emily had Homer with her all this time and Mrs. Mallard no longer had to suffer under her husband.

Every day texts are used to make sense of one another and these two are no different, you can read both of these texts on their own and understand them, but to understand what they really mean, you are going to need both of them. Love, is what makes this entire world go round, whether its love for your country love for your God or love for your fellow man, love is what drives our society. The issues of how confinement and lack of attention both stem from love and the way we love our families and how what we want for them is to be safe but we have to let them be their own person at some point in their young lives to prevent them from becoming afraid of society, danger and sadness. We cannot keep doing this we need to let our loved ones experience the world enough so that they can make the decision for themselves if they want to be apart of society. Love, confinement, and lack of attention can lead to some very unfortunate situations, these two texts are able to convey that message so seamlessly that it almost feels like they were meant to complement on another.
