During time of agony and terror in the United States of America, the president will give a motiving speech about the incident so that the people of America can overcome their emotions. A great example of this type of speech is one by George Bush about the attack on the World Trade Center and the speech by Franklin Roosevelt about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Both the speeches by George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt were inspirational even though both speeches have effective ways to inform people, their way of presenting the speech are linked together but also have their own personal style to their speech. The speeches by George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt are similar by having the same tempo in giving the speech and both of the presidents mention God in their speeches. Even though George Bush's speech was inspired by the style of Franklin Roosevelt's speech, George Bush's speech was different in the way he was presenting the speech and how he talk about the enemy. In both speeches by George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt, both president used certain word choices and rhetorical moves to emphasize who was the enemy, by pausing after key words and having a strong confident voice saying who the enemy was. How to recover from the attack and what their plan in the future to find justice for the people who cause the agony. Both the speeches presented by the president had some similarity, but they also were different in their own styles by using certain word choices and rhetorical moves to emphasize different things in their speeches.

Both George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt are powerful speakers and have the ability of motivating people and leading people through out there presidency. Franklin Roosevelt is the 32nd president and one of the most known in the United States by being elected 4 time and declaring war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor Franklin Roosevelt gave his famous speech, what is now known as the Infamy speech. Three hours after he gave his famous speech he sign the document that declared war on the Japan. After the going to war with Japan it will take six years and one day before the war is won. George Bush was the 41st president of the United States and was best known for declaring war on terrorism after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. After the attack on the World Trade Center, George Bush addressed a joint session of Congress and announced war on terror. It would not be until 2011 when the military troops were being pulled out of Iraq. Both of the presidents had difficult situation that they had to take control of by having a powerful speech to address the nation with.

The speech George Bush formed had many similarity with the iconic speech Franklin Roosevelt give out after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In Franklin Roosevelt's speech he began his sentences with a calm voice and low rhythm to a powerful voice and fast passes rhythm though out his speech. George Bush used this technique in his speech after the terrorist attack. This technique used by both Franklin Roosevelt and George Bush makes the audience and the viewer excided and patriotic for the country, this gets the emotions of the nation to convert their sad and depressed feelings to a motived state to fight against the enemy. In the speech by Franklin Roosevelt, he used another technique to make the country more motivated and give the impression that there is a plan of action that going be put forward. This technique was to emphasize and to project his voice on key words. George Bush used this element in his speech to calm the nation down after the nation had so many unanswered questions after the terrorist attack. Another method George bush used form the Franklins Roosevelt speech was to include God in his speech. The method to use in God in the speech was to represent hope and to give empathy to the one who lost their live in the attack made by the terrorist and the people of japan. This method was to show the nation that God chose the side of the United States, and through him he can help us defeat the enemy. By having a powerful speech that was delivered by Franklin Roosevelt that was the same scenario of an attack by an enemy, George Bush used some the technique to calm the nation and get them motivated to fight for their country.

In the speech by George Bush after the terrorist attack, he used technique and methods that were similar to Franklin Roosevelt's speech on Pearl Harbor, but George Bush had his own way of presenting his speech to the United States. After the attack on the World Trade Center George Bush's voice was calm and empathetic towards the nation however, Franklin Roosevelt's voice in delivering the speech was louder and more powerful confidant voice. The reason for this different in projecting the voice of the speech was the situation that was going on in America at that time. During the terrorist attack of the World Trade Center, the United States saw everything that was going on including, the planes hitting the buildings, people committing suicide, and also the collapse of the building with the emergency response people inside. This scarred the viewers which made them sad, depressed and in fear for the country. Because of this the George Bush used a calmer voice to approach to the situation than Franklin Roosevelt. One thing Franklin Roosevelt did in his speech was that he made very clear that the Japanize bombed Pearl Harbor for war. This was different from George Bush's speech because during the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, there was a major war happening in Europe at the time that the United State had no involvement in. Because of this, Franklin Roosevelt wanted the nation to know that the Japanize did this on purpose, so that nation would get angry at japan and the Axis power, and then join the war against them. Another thing George Bush altered from the approach that Franklin Roosevelt took was that George Bush talk more about recovering from the terrorist attack then Franklin Roosevelt. This was because of the chaos and the little information the government had at the time. When the little amount of information the government did know if this was an act of war or terrorist form al-Qaida. Therefore George Bush had to elaborate more on the recovery then the future plan of getting justice towards the enemy. Because of the different in time period and the different situation that was going on, the president had to construct their speeches differently than one another

In the speeches by George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt, both of the presidents uses key and important words and emphasized them to make them stand out in there speeches. In the beginning of Franklin Roosevelt speech, he used the iconic word "Infamy" and had a long pause to make the word stand out. Franklin Roosevelt used this specific word choice because it described the entire event by its definition which is the state of being well known for some bad quality or deed. Franklin Roosevelt knew that the attack on Pearl Harbor well never be forgotten and will written down in the history books because of how horrifying the event was. Another word choice Franklin Roosevelt used in his speech was "last night". This was iconic because Franklin Roosevelt used it four time in the begging of the sentence. The first time Franklin Roosevelt said time in his speech he said "Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong. Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam". He used this word choice to make the United States know that the attacks happen in the past, and that the time to act is today. He also used this word to make the nation more patriotic for the country and go to war with japan because they attacked other allies of the country. An iconic word choice George Bush used in his speech was the word "America", he emphasized this word by having long pauses after saying it. George Bush the word America instead of the United States because it give a patriotic vibe and more of a connection as whole body instead of just people in a country. This plays a part in the motivation element in his speech, it make people want to help the country out instead of just getting angry. All of the key words used by George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt had a purpose in the speech and how they used the certain word to motivate people in country. With the speeches by George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt both impacted the people of the United States differently but use the same technique to present their speeches. While George Bush and Franklin Roosevelt had the similarity by pausing after important word and mentioning God in their speeches, they were also different in their style about presenting the information. We can use the knowledge about the similarity and differences about the speeches to strengthen our own public speaking skill.
