Visual texts have the possibility of being interpreted in a variety of different ways. Contrary to texts from a book that contains words to explain the meaning, a picture or video does not have the message simply written down. Within the actual picture hides individual, less noticeable factors that contribute to the overall effect of the visual text. The ad promoting a quality education uses these individual elements to make the argument more effective and produce a reaction from the audience.

The purpose of the quality education ad is to establish the importance of proper schooling for individuals worldwide. In this ad, students are taking a class picture for their school. These children have grown up in an impoverished area in Chile. A man is standing to the side of the children with his shirt unbuttoned and is in possession of a gun. They are holding a sign in front of them in order to display how not receiving an education does not just effect them, but the world as a whole. This picture has many factors other than the children themselves that supplies evidence for their cause.

The color palette is used to add emphasis to the effects of poverty. The bland, dark colors that are shown throughout the picture give the impression of a dirty environment with not many resources available. These colors also have an internal effect on the ad's audience. Viewers see this image and are immediately impacted by the filthiness of the surroundings. The individual could potentially have emotions of sorrow and compassion that result in response to the devastating conditions. These feelings are what the creator of the ad is intentionally trying to bring about from each person. Using this particular color scheme highlights the area of poverty that these children are residing in.

Another key factor involved in this ad is form. Three-dimensional objects are utilized to enhance the reality of the picture. The bodies of these young children, along with their facial expressions, are fully captured by the photographer. Having an entire view of the students helps the audience register that there are children out in the world that are currently facing the issue of having a low-class, or any education. It is not a small problem only advertised on television, but yet, an international matter that requires attention to be resolved.

Dominance is employed with the use of positioning. The students along with the adult carrying a gun are placed at the front and in the center of the picture. This specific positioning is significant because it establishes that the children are the main focal point of the ad. Having a closer up picture of the class gives the audience the ability to see how impoverished these young children actually are. Their torn clothes, dirty faces, and sad expressions all contribute to the poor not having the ability to obtain the same benefits as the wealthy. The whole idea of promoting a quality education is for the children who do not have the resources to acquire it.

Hierarchy is an important quality in this ad shown by the quote "A child who learns is an adult who teaches. Help us provide quality education to thousands of children in Chile because if we can change their education we can change their destiny." This quote is printed on the sign held in front of the students. The hierarchy of this sign is important because of the message printed on it. The sign is positioned ahead of the class on the ground to show that it is an important element in the picture, however it is not an exaggerated size or color in order to avoid taking away from the students themselves. The message is printed through the use of the text but the creator wants it to be interpreted through the picture. The student's size and placement on the page makes it clear to the audience that the students are the most significant component portrayed in this ad. The sign only serves as a supporting factor.

The basic element of unity is used between all of the students and the man carrying a gun. All of these individuals appear to belong together. Unity is demonstrated to show any of these young children could become like this man in the future. A lack of education can result in terrible consequences. Although this man may be interpreted in a variety of ways, he exemplifies the appearance of a felon. Some of these children could potentially become criminals like the man in the picture in order to obtain what they believe is necessary for their families and for themselves. A quality education will provide these kids with the knowledge and experience that is imperative to live a healthy life. "If we can change their education we can change their destiny" (Nudd 1). A quality education should not be just an opportunity offered to those who can afford it. If it is provided to these students, it could change their lives.

There are endless factors that affect the overall message of a visual text. These basic elements of visual design help to keep interest and engage the audience. Each element that may not seem significant is actually subconsciously adding to the audience's point of view on an image or video. For instance, the distressing colors and idea of poverty is affecting each individual psychologically. The audience is unaware of all the key factors that are strategically placed and play a role in getting the message across. For this particular ad, the message is that a quality education should be implemented to every child no matter the cost. Proper knowledge will affect a person's future and we can change that by promoting this issue worldwide. Using a visual text instead of a written message to endorse this situation allows people to place themselves in the picture and generates the theory that it could be them.
